About Rachel

I’ve been blogging since 2006 and fell straight into doing something I loved.   Since then I’ve written about anything, from broken down fences to techno-tampons and everything in between.

In 2010 life took an abrupt left turn and I found myself forced to address an escalating health issue.  As a distraction, I signed up for NaNoWriMo and tried my hand at writing a novel.  What came out of that will never see the light of day, but it did fire my enthusiasm for writing fiction.  Since then I’ve picked up a following on FanFiction.  The genre has many detractors and yes, the stories on the site vary in quality, but it has one very important benefit for the developing writer:  You have access to a great number of readers who do not shy away from criticism and feedback is valuable, especially when you’re getting over that initial hurdle of letting people read and comment on your work.  It very quickly stops you being precious about it and toughens you up!

I’m originally from Lancashire but I’ve been resident in the southern half of the country since 1988.  I currently live in Ampthill, Bedfordshire which doubles as the mythical ‘Middle Narnia’.  I’m married and I have a teenage daughter at University, where she’s studying drinking and ordering from Dominos Pizza.

I’m managed by a large ginger cat who sportingly lets me live in his house on condition that the bath tap is turned on when he wants to drink, the cat flap is always open and he can sleep where the heck he likes.

I mostly listen to BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 4
On my iPod you’ll find…
Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Kaiser Chiefs, Tom Petty, ELO, Kylie Minogue, Delays, Yvonne Lyon, Seth Lakeman, Tori Amos and lots of other artists I find from time to time. Also, I have the propensity to like the cheesiest tracks – mostly from the 70s and 80s.

Most recent reads…
Burning Bright – Tracy Chevalier
We Are All Made of Stars – Rowan Coleman
Escape to Perdition – James Silvester
To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee

Favourite Authors include: Thomas Hardy, Mark Helprin, Joanne Harris, Carole Matthews, Terry Pratchett, Jean M Auel, Jane Austen, Stephenie Meyer, Helen Dunmore and many others.  Once I like an author I tend to read absolutely everything by them.

Love Actually, Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Fifth Element, The Devil Wears Prada, Star Trek, Star Wars, Galaxy Quest, Twilight Saga, Lord of the Rings, Steel Magnolias.

I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I never miss Doctor Who.  I tend to watch a lot of stuff on DVD years after everyone else.  Case in point is Game of Thrones.  I’m two series behind the rest of the world.  Although I love Strictly Come Dancing, I don’t do X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent, I’m a Celebrity or Big Brother.  I’ll just look at you blankly if you talk about those.

Food and Drink…
Anything I don’t have to cook served with wine.  Keep it coming!
